Hello everyone! As I begin writing to you, we only have 21 hours to go on my 8th successful Kickstarter campaign. Late, but still exciting we got added as a Project Kickstarter Loves. I don't think I have ever seen a campaign get the badge this late in a campaign. Pretty cool. If you have any interest in getting a murder mystery comic, now is this time. Now that we are funded the plan is all proceeds go to The American Red Cross!
So, what is next on my comic making adventure now that we are wrapping up this campaign? To be honest it's another campaign. Number 9. Sometimes you have to strike while an artist is not busy and for this book that time is now or maybe never. Introducing The Dying Run Part II: Freelancer. Last year, I ran a successful campaign for a comic about a supervillain forced into a game of death on the chance of getting out of prison to be with his dying grandmother. This time we will focus on the hero side of the coin. Veteran Curt Hawkins always dreamed of being a superhero. When he returned home from serving overseas he pursued his dream with an intensity. The problem is those years of dogged pursuit has come at the cost of his family. When he is offered on last chance at redemption with his daughter, he also receives what he always longed for...a team-up with his idol US Brave. They'll find themselves thrown into a battle royale and a desperate need to find a way back home. This has been a weird journey to finally get to this launch. I wrote this story back in 2022. I felt the need to explore someone who's dream is costing them their time with their family. I pitched the idea to my friend (fellow Army vet) Alex Zapata and he was immediately onboard to tell this one-shot. But just as he got started on the art, my health began to spiral. As if my subconscious had figured something out before I truly had, I wrote a story about wanting to connect with family, just as I really needed to remove myself from my dream and focus on family first and foremost. I am lucky. I decided in 2024 to give comics another go. But just as I am ramping up to get making comics, Alex drops the bombshell. He is getting out of comics to spend time with his own family. Just as I start making first Dying Run, I am without an artist to finish the other side to my story. Once again I get super lucky and my friend Mike Morrocco offers to help finish this comic. He is a busy artist and we are launching in a weird time. Only hope that you all will find some interest in this weirdly personal story I am telling set in a superhero vs supervillain battle for life or death.
Sorry this one is a bit longer than the usual. I am doing so much these days. Probably because I have almost lost out on my chance for my dream twice in my life and I am desperate to get to all the things I can. Example: did you know I write for the Comic Book Yeti? Weekly I cover new comic releases, crowdfunding campaign and general comics excitement! I want to help fellow creators as much as I can. (side note: if you are a creator and need help at anytime with campaigns, distro or whatever, let me help you free of charge) https://www.comicbookyeti.com/post/4-color-low-down-weekly-comics-news-4-16-25
Also, my pitch with Ravi Teixeira made Kid's Comics Unite Pitchfest list for best kids pitches: https://kidscomicsunite.com/kids-comics-pitchfest-2025/user/dougwood/#project-1 Hopefully we will gather some interest and get this graphic novel made! I really want to work in kids comics and I have been pitching projects for a few years at this point. I have gotten a ton of positive feedback, but still trying to get that first one to take a chance on me. |
