Let's Try This Again! Doug Wood's Newsletter 3/19/25

Hello friends! I am back with a new month of weird and the wild here on my newsletter. I have been diligently working nonstop on comics in the past month. From learning to letter, to learning to color properly, to flatting a couple of friends books, to submitting a YA OGN pitch to a requesting editor, to submitting to a Kids Comics Pitchfest, to writing as much as I can the next issues of comics I have had launch recently.

SPEAKING OF LAUNCHING

Artist Jack Van Thomme have launched our new comic series today, In The Pale Moonlight.

This book has had many ups and downs throughout its conception and I thought it would be fun to lay it all out here in the newsletter. It all started in 2020. I had posted on a social media site that I was looking for an agent, when suddenly I was dm'd by a comics publisher out of the blue. They said they would have no problem being my comics agent or more importantly my manager. This person also happened to be the owners of a certain early 90's Image Comics IP.

The thing is, I knew exactly what this person had been advertising to creators and what kinds of nonpayment's to creators had been happening. In a moment of fun I decided to troll this person to see how far I could push the thing. I did a several hour phone call with this person where at the end I was offered a chance to pitch characters the publisher owned. As I thought of my silly pitch, I remembered a certain Alan Moore run with one of the characters. But the joke pitch kept eating at my psyche until I realized I needed to make this comic a very real thing.

Sidenote: During all of this I had been giggling with my friends about all this. Some even requested to be apart of the fun. The idea ballooned up so much it seemed like a waste of talent and thus I decided to launch the very real anthology Big Hype.

After losing the original artist in 2021, I was lucky to be approached by long time friend and prolific Comic Jam contributor Jack Van Thomme. We set to get this book made and revamped a lot of what came before. I think Jack's mind and skills are perfectly match for the bizarre story of what is essentially a locked room murder mystery. I hope you all can take a look and consider backing. Jack had the incredible idea of only funding for shipping and printing, so that we can donate all proceeds past the goal to The American Red Cross!

WHAT WERE THOSE OTHER THINGS I WAS WORKING ON?

Sorry for the long newsletter. I will try to keep this section short.

THE DYING RUN PART II is nearly here! Artist Mike Morrocco has finished up everything for a Kickstarter except a thumbnail. We cannot wait to show you this gripping story of a hero that is chasing his dream, even if it is costing him his family. I am so hyped on this that I have begun writing the next issue in this standalone series.

ULTRAMAX II is also nearly here! Artist Vinicius Carriero is done with all art need for the book. We were blessed to get a variant cover offer from a friend and we are just waiting on that to finish up before our launch!

INHERITANCE is a series that I am not so seriously calling my magnum opus. Artist Sasabu is hard at work on penciling our campaign pages. I have the whole first issue written out and I have begun writing issue 2. I am very pleased with how easy this second issue has been to write so far.

I'll Leave You Here... Next Time I Hope To Share More Fun Stuff!
